Guild receives Chancellor’s Community Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement
The Chancellor’s Community Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement is awarded to a community-based organization that has been engaged in a meaningful program of collaboration with one or more academic units at IUPUI. The recipient of this award has demonstrated how campus-community partnerships have contributed not only to improving the quality of life in communities but also to student learning and faculty work at IUPUI.
Through its partnership with Wishard Health Services and the many IU programs at Wishard Hospital, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the quality of healthcare provided to members of our community. This includes many who have resided in downtown Indianapolis adjacent to the IUPUI campus. In fact, the Guild has been the major philanthropic supporter of Wishard Health Services for many years.
Wishard Hospital, which is managed through a partnership between the IU School of Medicine and the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, also plays a major role in the education and training of physicians in Indiana. It is one of the major teaching venues for the School of Medicine. As a result, over half of the physicians now practicing in the state of Indiana received part of their training in its facilities. It is in these facilities that School of Medicine faculty and trainees provide healthcare for the largest proportion of indigent patients of any hospital in the state.
Throughout the years, many IU programs located at Wishard have been the beneficiaries of the philanthropic efforts of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. This financial support has allowed these programs to better serve the needs of IUPUI and ultimately our entire community.
